India Raises Concern Over Derogatory Comments on PM Modi by Maldives Deputy Minister, Sparks Diplomatic Tensions

India expressed deep concerns on Sunday regarding the recent “derogatory” comments made by Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources indicate that the Indian High Commissioner in Male has brought the matter to the attention of the Maldives government. This development transpired as the Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu-led government distanced itself from the minister’s remarks.

The Maldives government released a statement emphasizing the importance of exercising freedom of expression democratically and responsibly. They underscored the need to avoid spreading hatred and negativity that could hinder the close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners. The statement also asserted that the relevant authorities would not hesitate to take action against those making derogatory remarks.

Key points in the India-Maldives dispute include the use of disparaging language by Mariyam Shiuna, referring to PM Modi as a ‘clown’ and ‘puppet.’ This sparked significant outrage in India, with calls for boycotting travel to the Maldives. Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed criticized the comments and hailed India as a “key ally” for the security and prosperity of the archipelago nation.

As the controversy escalated, Nasheed urged the Muizzu government to distance itself from Shiuna’s remarks and provide clear assurance to India that they do not reflect government policy. The diplomatic fallout occurs against the backdrop of a shift in Maldives’ alignment with the Arab world, evidenced by President Muizzu’s international trip to Turkey, known for its anti-India views.

The new government’s alignment with the Arab world contrasts with the traditionally close ties between India and the Maldives, leading to strained relations since Muizzu’s election as president. India raised concerns through diplomatic channels, navigating a complex situation fueled by political rhetoric and shifting alliances. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the “hateful” language used against India, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations that should not be negatively impacted by such remarks.
